Sandro Wagner: Former Germany Striker Turns Down DFB Coaching Role

Wagner Cites Personal Reasons for Declining Offer

Once a Player, Always a Player?

Former Germany striker Sandro Wagner has turned down an offer to join the German Football Association (DFB) as a coach for their 2024 European Championship training camp.

The 34-year-old, who last played for Chinese Super League club Tianjin TEDA, said he had made the decision for personal reasons.

"I'm very grateful for the offer from the DFB," Wagner said in a statement. "It's a great honor to be asked to coach your country, but I've decided that it's not the right time for me at the moment.

Wagner, who scored five goals in 26 appearances for Germany, has been working as a pundit since retiring from playing in 2020. He has also been linked with a number of coaching roles, including with his former club Bayern Munich.

It is not clear what Wagner's long-term plans are, but it is clear that he is not ready to commit to coaching at this stage of his life.
